Our Working Groups are involved in a variety of activities from Community intiatives and outreach to research based projects.
Currently, the Coalition has 7 working groups -Communication and Education, Fund, Technical Advisory, Science, Research and Habitat, Coastal Erosion, Steering Committee, and Annual General Meeting, and Constitution and Policy (Ad Hoc).

Science, Research and Habitat Working Group

This group links the Coalition with other science and research organizations. Over the past few years it has developed a preliminary list of indicators of use in identifying the sustainability of the Southern Gulf and is now looking at ways to move forward with these indicators by supplying the necessary data and developing a reporting mechanism. The Working Group is interested in the concept of carrying capacity in the marine environment and ways to implement a concept that would be of use in the Gulf.

Fund Working Group

The Fund working group identifies opportunities for funding to support the ongoing costs of the Coalition. This includes seeking out avenues for corporate sponsorship, funding from philanthropic organizations and foundations. Further, the working group develops marketable products for sale and organizes fund-raising activities to complement the major revenues.

Coastal Erosion Working Group

The Coastal Erosion Working Group is relatively new to the Coalition having been formed following the 2004 AGM which was held in Carleton, Quebec. Over the past year the committee has been working hard to try to pinpoint the direction they should take with their work plan. Coastal erosion is a major issue for the Southern Gulf and the committee needs to find the best way to address this concern. The group plans on developing a website that will contain a host of information including: the pros and cons of various coastal erosion protection structures, checklist tool to help home owners categorize their shoreline, description and contact information for the various provincial and federal government policies that deal with the coast, data on coastal erosion rates, etc. Basically the website could be a one stop shop for coastal erosion in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Communication and Education Working Group

The Communication and Education Working group is responsible for accessing or providing materials and resources to the Coalition on the subject of Sustainability, group / member news, meetings and other subjects of interest associated with the mandate of the Coalition. Included in this is the preparation and distribution of the regular newsletter to all Coalition members. This Working Group is also responsible to prepare materials to bring to trade shows, conferences and seminars for promoting the Coalition and its mandate, to promote membership. This Group will develop and implement a Communication Plan to facilitate interactions between members. It is also the group responsible to develop tools to promote awareness of the environment and sustainability issues in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence region.

The Technical Advisory works to assist in the communication and exchange of information between groups, and to bridge the internal capacity and mandates of other Coalition working groups.

Annual General Meeting (AGM) Working Group

The purpose of this working group is to organize the Annual General Meeting, occurring at a different location each year. This is where the general constitutions of the incorporated and non-incorporated bodies that constitute the Coalition are reviewed as required.

AGM is conducted in a professional and fair manner to ensure all membership can participate and become involved in the various committees and working groups.

The next AGM will be held in Miramichi, NB on May 13, 2006.
